Who’s this precious pooch? It’s Pierce, our 2013 Top Dog! Pierce’s mom, Karen, was the top individual fundraiser at Mutt Strut 2012, raising more than $7,000 to help the animals at the Humane Society of Indianapolis.
And, guess what, Pierce is also an IndyHumane alumnus! He was born in the spring of 2010 and was abandoned in a play yard at IndyHumane. At only about six-eight weeks old and three pounds, this exceptionally cute little guy developed pneumonia because of his chilly stay outside. Thankfully, IndyHumane staff found him and were able to nurse him back to health. Staff named him Pierce Brosnan, after the debonair actor, because he was just so adorable. Karen met Pierce that June, and healthy Pierce joined her family as an energetic bundle of puppy!
Pierce has one unusual trait: he doesn’t like to go for walks! If he sees Karen putting on her shoes or coat, he bolts under the bed. He’s okay once the walk has commenced, but they don’t use the “W—“ word in their house!
When he’s not acting as our “ambassa-dog” and encouraging people to donate to IndyHumane, Pierce loves to play tug of war and fetch. He also has an older brother, and while they get along great, his dog best friend is his neighbor Max. He goes outside several times a day looking for Max, and they chase each other and wrestle until it’s time to go home. Pierce enjoys apples and carrots, and dog treats, of course.
Karen supports Mutt Strut and IndyHumane because she thinks every shelter dog (or cat) should have a chance. Karen says, “[Shelter animals] are all very loving and deserve that love in return…[the] Humane Society of Indianapolis provides a wonderful service to the community. I wouldn’t have my Pierce today if they hadn’t provided medical assistance and given him the human love and care needed!”
